SAN MATEO UNION HIGH SCHOOL DISTRICT

TO HOLD SECOND PUBLIC HEARING REGARDING

DRAFT SURPLUS PROPERTY RECOMMENDATION REPORT

SAN MATEO, CA -- A second public hearing to consider a set of draft recommendations regarding the possible disposition of surplus property owned by the San Mateo Union High School District will be held at 7 p.m. Feb. 2 in the multi-purpose room at Crestmoor Elementary School, 2322 Crestmoor Drive, San Bruno, CA 94066.

A District citizens’ advisory committee has found that properties on two District sites can be considered surplus: Two small parcels at Hillsdale High School in San Mateo and the entire former Crestmoor High School site in San Bruno.

The 41-acre Crestmoor High campus was closed as a comprehensive high school in 1980 due to a precipitous District enrollment decline. Since then, it has been used to house the District’s continuation school, Peninsula High School, and a variety of private enterprises which have been leasing space there.

As part of its findings, the committee has stated that any sale or lease of the Crestmoor acreage must be predicated on finding a more suitable and central location within the district for the continuation school and its 240 students.

The District contained more than 13,000 students in seven comprehensive high schools in 1970. Today, it has 8,500 pupils in six schools.

As part of its analysis of the capacity of those six campuses, the committee found that they could accommodate another 2,905 youngsters today _ and 2,175 more if extra classrooms were added to those sites where space is available.

The committee also intends to conduct a public hearing on these matters in San Mateo at a later date.

The members of the committee are: Mark Avelar, Paul Belzer, Craig Childress, Dwight Dunn, Skip Henderson, Mike Loy, Deirdre Marblestone, Tom Ricci, John Ward and Neil Wild.

The Feb. 2 hearing is scheduled to be shown live on San Bruno Cable-TV.
