ELD Courses

English Language Development (ELD) Courses

English Language Development 1 and 2 (two period block)
These classes are for beginning English Learners (ELs) who receive instruction in listening, speaking, reading, and writing in English in order to participate in simple conversations and to read and write what they can say. These classes address the ELD Standards for Emerging English Learners.
(10 English credits + 10 elective credits


English Language Development 3 and 4 (two period block) *
These classes are for intermediate ELs who have sufficient English skills to read simple short stories and to react to them orally and in writing. Students receive language instruction that will help them to participate successfully in the mainstream program. ELD 3-4 is an equivalent experience to English 1-2 CP. These classes address the ELD Standards at the Expanding and Bridging levels as well as the Grade 9 English Language Arts Content Standards.  
(10 English credits + 10 elective credits)


Reading ELD 1-4
These classes teach ELs to transfer reading skills from their primary language to English and to improve them. Non-readers will learn reading skills. ELs reading below the eighth grade level on a standardized reading test are required to enroll in one of these classes. These classes address the ELD Reading Content Standards. 
(10 elective credits)


Transitional ELD 1-2
This class is for ELs who have recently completed the ELD 3-4 class and who are enrolled in a mainstream English class. It provides standards based ELD instruction in addition to academic support in all content areas for students who are in transition to becoming fluent. This class addresses the ELD Standards at the Bridging level.
