iStock Image Tennis Ball and RacquetSan Mateo High School’s Emily Chan and Lauren Young have been named 2016 Girls’ Tennis Players of the Year by the San Mateo Daily Journal. The two juniors were the Peninsula Athletic League’s dominant doubles entrant this past season. Chan and Young posted an overall 20-2 record (13-0 in the PAL) in 2016. PAL champions, they have been varsity tennis players since they entered San Mateo as freshmen. Their coach, Ed Schuler, a San Mateo grad himself, said the twosome provided “leadership, a focused leadership” throughout the season. “They have great maturity and responsibility,” he said. “It’s a perfect chemistry.” Additionally, Mills High School senior, Sarah Gayer, was named the Daily Journal’s Girls’ Cross-Country Runner of the Year. She was a 2016 PAL cross-country champion and proceeded to secure a bronze medal in Central Coast Section Division III competition.
