Later Start Time on Board's March 23rd Agenda

SMUHSD’s Board of Trustees invites you to its Thursday, March 23, 2017 regular meeting. At this meeting, staff will provide an update on the topic of a later start time for our comprehensive high schools. The SMUHSD is constantly looking for ways to improve the social-emotional health of its students. A key component of student health is the amount of time a student sleeps and the quality of that sleep. There is a strong and growing body of research that suggests that many students would not only benefit from considerably more sleep, but also a later school start time. While the research is persuasive, concerns have been expressed about traffic, family schedules, and the corresponding later end time for school. To gain family, student and staff feedback on this idea, the Superintendent surveyed our school community. At the March 23rd board meeting, staff will provide an overview of the survey findings, share possible options and will recommend some next steps.  The public meeting will take place at the San Mateo Adult School, 789 E Poplar Ave, San Mateo starting at 7pm. However, this agenda item will start 8:30pm or later once all board members are able to be present for this important topic. Click HERE to see the agenda.
