Four District Student-Athletes Compete in State Meet

iStock Running Shoes on TrackFour outstanding student-athletes representing San Mateo Union High School District schools competed in the 2017 California Interscholastic Federation State Track and Field Meet held on the first weekend in June in Fresno County. Three of the District competitors were from Mills High School: Sarah Gayer (3,200 meters); Taina Livai (shot put); and Isi Mapa (shot put). Jimmy Escobar of Burlingame High School competed in the pole vault as well. The students did not finish high enough to qualify for points in the finals. However, their participation is noteworthy because of the size and scope of the California track and field meet. It is the largest such event in the U.S., embracing 10 separate geographic sections and more than 4,400 high schools located throughout the state. The District’s high-achieving foursome qualified for the state meet by producing strong marks and finishes in their individual events in the Central Coast Section Track and Field Meet held in late May. That section includes schools from San Francisco south to King City.
