Photo of Abaya with NY Lyric OperaSan Mateo High School Student Abhaya Krishnan-Jha won first place in the High School Musical Theatre Competition in the 2017 Classical Singer National Voice Competition held in Chicago, IL. More than 1,300 singers participated in the first round of the Classical and Musical Theatre divisions, with winners advancing to the final rounds at the CS Convention in Chicago, where the Grand Champions in each division were selected and announced. In addition to her first place award in the High School Musical Theatre Division and a check for $1,000, Abhaya was also a Quarterfinalist in the High School Classical Division of the CS Voice Competition. Following her awards, Abhaya was accepted to be the youngest cast member of the New York Lyric Opera Theatre Summer Program at the age of 16 and had the opportunity to perform in both lead and ensemble roles in New York with pre-professional and professional opera singers at prestigious venues including Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center and National Opera Center. Abhaya's achievements are in large part, due to the incredible performing arts programs at San Mateo High School and the District!
