About the Instruction Department

The SMUHSD Instruction Department provides direction, oversight and support for the following areas across our district:

  • Curriculum and Instructional Services
  • Professional Development
  • Assessment
  • English Language Development (ELD)
  • Special Education

We coordinate curriculum councils in all subject areas in which teacher leaders meet monthly to continuously improve curriculum and instruction.

Curriculum Council's
Each curriculum council plans professional development activities including an annual professional development day, oversees common assessments, recommends textbooks for adoption and shares best instructional practices and resources.

Curriculum and Instruction Council
Our Curriculum and Instruction Council leads and coordinates the work of all the curriculum councils and consists of district administrators, site principals and teacher leaders designated as curriculum coordinators.

Goals
Our overarching goal is to assist our schools in maximizing the academic potential of all of our students and closing student performance achievement gaps.
