SAN MATEO, CA -- A public hearing will be held at 7 p.m. Nov. 17 at the Capuchino High School Little Theater, 1601 Magnolia Drive, San Bruno, CA, to review draft recommendations identifying potential surplus property in the San Mateo Union High School District and to solicit input.
A district committee concluded that two properties can be considered surplus: two small parcels located at Hillsdale High School in San Mateo and the entire former Crestmoor High School site in San Bruno. The 41-acre Crestmoor campus was closed as a comprehensive high school in 1980 due to a precipitous District enrollment decline. Since then, it has been used to house the district’s continuation school, Peninsula High School, and a variety of private enterprises which lease space there.
After the public hearing is conducted, the committee will update its report, incorporating public input, and present it to the District’s Board of Trustees at a board meeting. The trustees will consider it and may take action, if they deem it to be prudent and necessary to do so.
As part of its findings, the committee has stated that any disposition of the Crestmoor acreage be predicated on finding a more suitable and central location within the district for the continuation school.
The District contained more than 13,000 students in seven comprehensive high schools in 1970. Today, the District has 8,500 pupils.
As part of its analysis of student capacity, the committee found that the District could accommodate an additional 2,827 students today. If the District constructed additional classrooms, then another 2,175 more students could be accommodated; yielding a total of 5,002.
The members of the committee are: Mark Avelar, Paul Belzer, Craig Childress, Dwight Dunn, Skip Henderson, Mike Loy, Deirdre Marblestone, Tom Ricci, John Ward and Neil Wild.
