Work Permits

How to Obtain a Student Work Permit


  1. Obtain an application for a work permit from the California Department of Education's website (available at your school's office or visit the website link located on the lower left side of this page).
  2. Fill out application completely
    • Fill out student portion of form

    • Have parent or guardian sign

    • Have employer fill in Workman's Compensation Insurance and sign

  3. Bring the form back to your school office. Student must appear in person to obtain their work permit. Also bring the following items:

    1. Social Security Card

    2. Birth Certificate/Passport

    3. Picture ID/Driver's License


Please allow 15-20 minutes for processing the work permit.

For students that live within the SMUHSD boundaries and are enrolled in a non-public school, including incoming freshmen, call the Office of Curriculum & Assessment at (650) 558-2253 to schedule an appointment. Please allow 15-20 minutes for processing the work permit.
