During the 2022-2023 school year, the state of California is providing one complimentary breakfast meal and one complimentary lunch meal daily to ALL San Mateo Union High School District students. Breakfast is served before school or at brunch, and lunch is served daily.
Nutrition Program
The San Mateo Union High School District Student Nutrition Department participates in the National School Breakfast and Lunch Program. This is a program that serves nutritionally balanced meals every school day. During the 2022-2023 school year the state of California is providing one complimentary breakfast meal and one complimentary lunch meal daily to ALL San Mateo Union High School District students. Breakfast is served before school or at brunch, and lunch is served daily. This includes one entrée item plus at least one other item including milk, fruits, and vegetables during all of the service times. All students who are eligible for the program benefits should apply to receive other benefits provided for qualifying for the program. Participating students are not identified or treated differently. The free and reduced lunch application is now part of the annual online registration process, or the application can be found on the District website https://www.smuhsd.org/nutrition where additional information may also be found. (Ed. Code § 49510 et seq.)
The Nutrition Services department is made up of a team of food and nutrition professionals that are dedicated to students' health, well-being and their ability to learn. We support learning by promoting healthy habits for lifelong nutrition and fitness practices.
Meals, foods and beverages sold or served at schools meet state and federal requirements which are based on the USDA Dietary Guidelines. We provide students with access to a variety of affordable and appealing foods that meet the health and nutritional needs of students.
The Student Nutrition Services Department has made major changes to its program in an effort to offer complete healthy meals and to follow the new Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act.
The SMUHSD will continue offering healthy food and drinks educating students about healthy living, exercise, and eating habits. The District has created a Wellness Policy that complies with State Senate Bills 12 and 965.
Meals: The Student Nutrition Services Program will primarily offer complete meals for Breakfast, Brunch, and Lunch . These meals comply with either the National School Lunch Program, District Wellness Policy, or Board Policy 5030.
Additional Items: There will be a limited selection of items sold a la carte, either as an entrée or as a snack item; these items will meet our District Wellness Policy and Board Policy 5030.
Point of Sales: The Student Nutrition Department uses a computerized system for all transactions. Parents or Students may add funds to a student's account by going to the EZ School Pay website or filling out the Prepayment Form and turning it into the school's main office or the Student Nutrition Department located at the District Office at 650 N. Delaware St, San Mateo, CA 94401.
