  • READING ELD 1-2

    GRADE 9-12 CREDITS: 5 COLLEGE RECOMMENDED? NO
    PREREQUISITES: Placed in ELD 1,2; Reading level below 5.0

    Reading ELD 1-2 is a class for students concurrently enrolled in ELD 1-2. The goals are to improve the students’ reading levels, to further prepare the students to pass the district reading competency test, and to enable the students to read successfully in mainstream classes. The objectives include: building vocabulary and developing proficiency in the following reading/study skills: following directions, locating answers to specific questions, getting the main idea using context clues for understanding, drawing conclusions, detecting sequence of events in material read, using the dictionary, retelling a story, formulating questions about what will be read, and further developing the higher level reading/thinking skills (application analysis, synthesis, and evaluation). This course is aligned with the California State and National Reading Standards.

    READING ELD 3-4

    GRADE 9-12 CREDITS: 5 COLLEGE RECOMMENDED? NO
    PREREQUISITES: Placed in ELD 1,2; Reading level below 5.0

    Reading ELD 3-4 continues as a class for students currently enrolled in the English Development Program. The intent of this course is to enable students to succeed in mainstream courses. Students will increase their levels of reading fluency, vocabulary development, reading comprehension, analysis and study skills. The focus of the class is the development of specific reading skills and strategies that will enable students to read and make meaning of text in multiple content areas. This course is aligned with the California State and National Reading Standards.
