• Dear Mills High School Community,

It is an honor to be an Assistant Principal at Mills High School. I am excited to join the vibrant learning that’s happening at Mills, and I can’t wait to get to know each of you. For the past twenty years, I have served in a variety of educator roles, including paraeducator, Advanced Placement United States Government teacher, curriculum writer and developer, social studies department lead, inclusion teacher, community organizer, and summer arts program administrator. The majority of my career has been spent teaching rigorous and arts infused social studies classes through a civic engagement and social justice lens. I truly love teaching, and although I am stepping out of the classroom, I will always hold “teacher” at the core of who I am and how I approach being a school leader.

I want to take this opportunity to share a bit about myself outside of the classroom as well. I am an avid fan of museums, farmers’ markets, board games, the Redwoods, and the Supreme Court. I have two small and curious children (6 and 3 years old), and one large and friendly dog (Gertrude - a Saint Bernard). Together with my husband (an artist and proud stay-at-home parent), I enjoy teaching, learning, exploring, and advocating in my community.

My undergraduate education at San Diego State University and University of California Berkeley focused on history, undertold stories, and special education. At the University of San Francisco, where I earned my Masters in Teaching, I focused on infusing the arts into subject matter classrooms, and my Masters in Educational Leadership from UC Berkeley has been dedicated to studying professional development and equity in high achieving public schools. Each of these experiences has helped me to develop a philosophy of education that centers community, reflection, inclusion, active allyship, and joyful learning.

I hold a deep love of the Bay Area, and feel lucky to be able to call this special place home. The opportunity to anchor my work and service in Millbrae, at Mills, with you all, is an honor. Our shared dedication to educating all students with a growth mindset, creativity, and collaborative problem solving will help us go far together! Thank you in advance for welcoming me to Mills - I’m excited to be a Viking!

    In community,

    Lyndsey Schlax
