ESL Writing

  • San Mateo Adult School has three levels of ESL Writing Classes.


    Writing Basics 

    This class is for students who want to improve their basic skills in writing.   We start at the sentence level with simple sentences and move to compound and complex sentences.   We also work on basic paragraph structure, topic sentence, supporting and concluding sentences. We review errors in verb tense, word order, word form, word choice, connecting words, prepositions and articles.  We also focus on effective punctuation. The class is intended for ESL students who are at High Beginning or above, as well as students in the GED and High School Diploma programs.

    Writing Intensive  

    This class is designed as a class for students preparing to attend community college.  The curriculum focuses on academic writing for students who have mastered writing basic sentences and are ready to move onto paragraphs and essays.  In this class, you will review basic paragraph structure, acquire academic vocabulary, brainstorm ideas, learn to organize your thoughts, and write and revise your work.  This class is intended for Low and High Advanced ESL students, as well as students in the GED and High School Diploma programs. Commitment to attend all classes is highly recommended.

    Note: A writing assessment will be given to all new students who want to attend one of the writing classes.  Come for the assessment on Tuesday, August 27th or Thursday, August 29, to SMAS/Room 41, at 12:30 pm.

    Returning writing class students should check in with their writing teacher by August 27 if they want to return for the Fall term.
