Degrees and Certifications:
Ms. Alvarez teaches US History, Modern World History and serves as the AVID Coordinator. I am also an advisor to the Latinos Unidos Club. I graduated from San Jose State where I obtained a BA in History and a Minor in Mexican-American Studies. I continued my education at SJSU and obtained a Single Subject Credential in Social Science.
I grew up in Millbrae and graduated from Capuchino High School. I always knew I wanted to be a teacher, but it wasn’t until my sophomore year that I decided to go into Social Science. I had a great social science teacher who made the subject interesting and fun. I knew that I wanted to come back and teach at Capuchino because of my own experience. I had amazing and supportive teachers and a counselor. That made me want to return and give back to the Capuchino community. I feel teachers are more than educators, they are also mentors and role models. One of the things that keeps me motivated to teach is being able to change a student’s mind on how they feel about history. The other thing that keeps me motivated is when students have an “Ah-ha” moment, where they understand a concept or make a connection to their family history.
In my free time I enjoy reading, watching movies, and spending time with family and friends.
