This is the first year of a two year sequence that includes four assessments (an oral, an essay, and two final exam papers) that IB uses to determine whether the student receives college credit for this course.
Equal time is devoted to the study of literature, such as Beloved and The Things They Carried, and of non-literary texts, such as films, songs, photography, comedy specials, interactive online texts, and advertisements. The course is organized around thematic units that are modified yearly.
Students complete approximately four essays and three oral presentations in the course of the year, as well as two major creative assignments and numerous smaller assignments focusing on grammar, writing skills, and college readiness. Each week, students read an assigned article relating to the unit and write a reflection. There are also weekly reading quizzes.

Everything is a text. Every text operates within a larger cultural discourse. From billboards to pep rallies, poetry to novels - everything is a text to be deconstructed, analyzed and examined. The key aim of the course is the development of critical literacy and will focus on the application of philosophical and theoretical frameworks for critical analysis and examination of written, visual, and oral texts. Students are expected to demonstrate an awareness of how language and meaning inform, and are informed by, domains of power. This is the second year of a two year sequence.
