Winter Highlights
Basketball
The following teams were named CCS Basketball Champions in their respective divisions
- Aragon Girls Basketball - Division II
- Capuchino Girls Basketball - Division III (First ever girls basketball CCS championship)
- Burlingame Boys Basketball - Division III (Back to back CCS champs)
The following teams were invited to the CIF State Norcal Tournaments
- Girls Basketball:
- Mills advanced all the way to the Division IV regional semifinals
- Capuchino advanced to the second round of the Division II tournament
- Aragon, Burlingame and Hillsdale all lost in their respective division’s first rounds
- Boys Basketball
- Burlingame lost in the first round of the CIF Division II State tournament.
Other basketball highlights
Capuchino’s Melesungu Afeaki was named Bay Area News Group Girls Athlete of the Week. Melesungu was also named to the All-Bay Area News Group Third Team and Hillsdale's Makena Nitao was given Honorable Mention.
Burlingame's Sean Richardson was given Honorable Mention designation in the All-Bay Area News Group Boys Basketball Team.
Mills High School Girls Basketball Team was named the San Mateo Daily Journal’s Athletes of the Week.
Soccer
The Aragon Boys Soccer team was crowned CCS Division 1 Soccer Champions and they made it all the way to the CIF State Division III Regional Final where they lost 3-0.
Aragon’s Alexis Villanueva was named San Mateo Daily Journal Boys Soccer Player of the Year.
Wrestling
The following wrestlers were named PAL champions in their weight class:
- Xavier Bruening, Burlingame
- Joshua Aguilar, Capuchino
- Joshua was also awarded Outstanding Lower Weight Honors
- Calvin Pineda, Burlingame
- Riley Heikel, Capuchino
- Timothy Tulloch, San Mateo
PAL Girls Wrestling
Mills’ Annalese Leung repeated as PAL champion, winning the 118-pound title in 2022 to go along with her 2020 113-pound title.
Fall 2021 Highlights
Football
Aragon snapped a 27-year CCS Football title drought on November 27 when they won the CCS Division V Championship with a 38-14 victory over St. Francis-Watsonville. Congrats to Head Coach Steve Sell, his coaching staff and his team - you can catch an interview with Steve that took place right after the championship game. Some pretty great photos from the game can be found on the San Jose Mercury News website.
Aragon lost 36-28 to Salesian College Preparatory in Richmond on Saturday, December 4 in the CIF State Football Championship Bowl Games - Division 6-A.
More Football News
Although their season was cut short with a loss to San Benito High School in the CIF CCS Division II Playoffs - Burlingame High (8-3) still finished its season with a Bay Area News Group rank of #22.
Additionally, Hillsdale High made it to the Division IV playoffs but lost to Sacred Heart Prep 42-14. They finished the season 9-3 overall.

San Mateo High’s Lindsay Huang captured the PAL Golf Title in October. She was also named the PAL Girls Golfer of the Year. Joining her with All PAL First Team recognition was San Mateo’s Hannah Sangha; Hillsdale’s Ashlyn Johnson and Chase Nestor; and Aragon’s Grace Tao and Sofia Dioli.
Mills Girls Golf Team Earns Scholastic Team Honors
The Central Coast Section named the Mills High School Girls Golf team as its Fall 2021 Scholastic Champions. The award recognizes the team for their collective GPA’s compared to all other teams competing in the section.
Team members are: Kylie Chow (10), Jadyn Gee (12), Claudine Ladinez (10), Cassandra Lee (10), Vanessa Liu (9), Qiyu Meng (9), Morgan Nguyen (9), Molly O’Dea (12), Isabelle Poon (12), Jessica Poon (9), Weiqing (Joey) Stiu (9), Charlotte Tse (10), Kira Woo (10), Sofia Yentar (11), Janice Zheng (9).
These student athletes achieved distinction in the classroom, and at the same time, committed themselves to participate in the athletics program at Mills. Their academic performance indicates that participation in sports enhances classroom activities. The team participated in the Bay Division of the Peninsula Athletic League and ended the season in good standing, with team members qualifying for the league tournament at the end of the season.
Cross Country
Capuchino’s Myla Brignardello was crowned the CCS Division III individual champion when she captured first place with a time of 19 minutes, 47.5 seconds, becoming just the second runner in Cap girls’ cross-country history to claim a CCS title.
Myla was also named to the All PAL Cross Country First Team along with Hillsdale’s Clare Lucey and Andrew Taylor; Aragon’s Caitlin Clark, Zachary Low, and Toby Harris; and San Mateo’s Alex Grush.
Girls Tennis
The following girls tennis players were named to the Bay League All PAL First Team: Aragon’s Jessica Fu, Tessa Jawadi and Varsha Jawadi and Burlingame’s Mila Mulready.
Girls Volleyball
The Hillsdale High Girls Volleyball Team had an epic season! They swept top-seed Oak Ridge-El Dorado Hills 26-24, 25-21, 25-16 to claim the CIF Northern California Division I regional championship. They ended up losing in the 2021 CIF-State DI Championship on November 19 to Harvard-Westlake.
Jessica Dean and Victoria Vanos were named Co-MVPS of the PAL’s Bay League and joining them with First Team ALL PAL Bay League recognition were Burlingame’s Emma Madden and Kristie Lee; Aragon’s Jessica Castroviejo and Gabby Oaks; and San Mateo’s Izzy Rugg. Capuchino’s Luiza Silva and Ellie Wang and Mills’ Elisa May Young were named to the PAL Ocean League’s All PAL First Team as well.
Additionally, Victoria received the CIF's Pursuing Victory with Honor Award. This award is given to an athlete who demonstrated the strongest combination of sportsmanship and performance during the contest.
Water Polo
Burlingame Girls' Water Polo Player Alex Dolginskiy was named the league’s Most Valuable Goalie. Joining her with First Team All PAL recognition was Burlingame’s Natalie Sullivan Wu and Maryanne Maxwell; and Aragon’s Maddie Dobbs.
Aragon’s Xavier McKenzie and Arman Zahabi both received Boys' Water Polo First Team All League recognition.
