The mission of the Aragon Asian Parent Group:
Celebrate Asian cultures and heritage and support the success of all students at Aragon,
Provide a support network for member parents,
Contribute to building a unified, diverse, inclusive community of students, staff, administrators, and parents at Aragon.
The Aragon Asian Parent Group (AAPG) welcomes you to the new 2018-2019 school year. May it be a fulfilling and enjoyable year for all of our students and families!
Aragon’s Jump Start
August 9th -- We were pleased to meet many Freshmen families and students and families from all grades with our booths at Aragon’s Jump Start registration day.
College Student Panel: Before and After
August 17th -- Thank you for making AAPG’s first event of the year a huge success! Over 300 students and family members came to hear Aragon graduates share their experience and advice with current Aragon students considering college.
Our annual College Student Panel featured Aragon alumni who have completed their freshman year in college (and one gap year) at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, College of San Mateo, Cornell University, Harvard, Kent School, MIT, Stanford, and UC Santa Barbara. AAPG VP Ed Sun MC’d the evening, graciously helping to illuminate student insights.
Opening with a heartfelt Aragon Asian Parent Group overview, Co-President Sherri Haslam reminded families and students that college selection, Grade Point Averages, and test scores are only one part of the high school experience. Who we are as people--our character, values, and morals--are the most important pieces to strive for, versus material possessions and socio-economic “success.” Co-President Lynn Yokoe followed with the Aragon Asian Parent Group mission to contribute to an inclusive, diverse community at Aragon, supporting our students and families. We thank Ms. Laurie Tezak (college counselor) for working closely with the student panelists and Aragon Asian Parent Group Board members, including Winifred Leung, Addie Chan, Lisa Lee, and Angela An.
Lively Questions & Answers provided families with a student-centered view of college preparation in and out of school, with a concrete and thought provoking discussion on topics such as “Looking back, what would you recommend for college and scholarship application processes? Did you feel well-prepared for college; what might you have done differently? How did you select your college; what criteria would you recommend applicants consider? What is college life like?"
Packing the new MultiPurpose Room, we apologize for the broken microphone and last minute change in location. Next time we will bring our programming to the Aragon Theater! We thank Principal Kurtz and Vice Principal Berggren for being in attendance to support our programming and be available for family queries; we also appreciate their extra efforts volunteering with directions and technical support. Other parent leaders were also on hand to meet families--Mike Herrold (Parent Teacher Student Organization President), Michele Murphy, and Julie Savage.
Aragon Asian Parent Group’s first sponsor Apprentice Education was represented by Rui Yang and Julie Lee.
