    COVID Testing
SMUHSD will prioritize at-home rapid antigen testing this year and will have minimal on-site testing. Please stop by your health office or District Office to access free COVID tests.

    Exposure notifications
The District will use a group tracing model to notify students and staff members of possible exposure to COVID-19. This means that staff and students will be notified when there is a confirmed positive case in their class/office/worksite. These notifications will be disseminated to your email and/or text via our communications system, ParentSquare. Learn more about ParentSquare including how to download the app on the District’s website:

The San Mateo Union High School District follows the guidance of the California Department of Public Health and San Mateo County regarding face masks. Masks are available in the health office and by request. For students and staff returning after a recent positive test they should continue to wear a mask for a full 10 days while indoors.

The District continues to encourage all eligible individuals to get the COVID vaccine and booster. The vaccine is free and readily available to all Californians ages six months and older regardless of immigration or insurance status. Visit to find a free vaccine near you today. For more information about the safety and effectiveness of vaccines visit the CDPH’s website.

Sick Leave for Staff Who Get COVID (The State Bill expired 1/1/2023, SMUHSD extended this benefit until 6/30/2023)
Per Senate Bill 114, California requires employers to provide COVID-19 supplemental paid sick leave for most workers through December 31, 2022.  This includes circumstances in which workers are experiencing symptoms of COVID-19 and seeking a medical diagnosis, attending a vaccine appointment for themselves or for a family member, and/or if a worker's child is isolating due to COVID-19 infection. Workers, depending on classification, are entitled up to 10 days total from January 1, 2022 - December 31, 2022. Staff may submit a request for reclassification of sick leave hours form. Once the form is completed, Human Resources will make appropriate revisions to pay.

Expired Covid Tests

  • The California Department of Public Health endorses the emergency use of over-the counter COVID-19 Tests beyond their FDA authorized expiration. This blanket extension, subject to appropriate internal control development * during testing, is valid until CDPH posts that the emergency extension has ended, at which point participants should cease using tests beyond their printed expiration dates.
