December 2024 Update: San Mateo Union High School District Releases Results of California Dashboard: Progress and Areas for Improvement
The San Mateo Union High School District is pleased to announce the release of its latest results from the California Dashboard which reflect data from the 2023-24 school year. The results reflect a slight increase in overall graduation rates and highlight key areas of progress and concern across the District.
Graduation Rate Highlights
The District maintained its graduation rate status, now at 92.4%, which marks a marginal increase of 1.1 percentage points from the previous year. Notably, multilingual (ML) students are now categorized into Long Term English Learner (LTEL) and English Learner (EL) groups, allowing for more targeted support. The EL students have shown a significant increase of 4.4 percentage points, reaching 74.5%, while LTEL students have maintained a steady rate at 88.8% with a slight decline of 0.3 percentage points.
College and Career Indicator
The percentage of students classified as “Prepared” for college and careers has risen to 65.9%, reflecting a positive increase of 4 percentage points. This growth indicates our ongoing commitment to equipping students with the necessary skills for their future endeavors.
English Learner Progress
The EL progress, based on the English Language Proficiency Assessments for California (ELPAC) annual assessment, shows a mixed performance. The overall percentage of EL students maintaining proficiency is at 36.7%, a slight decline of 0.9% year over year. However, a more significant decline is observed in the Long-term English Learners, with 35.5%, reflecting a 5.8% drop from the previous year. Long-term EL's are students who have been designated as an EL for 7 or more years and have not been reclassified by the local and state assessment measures, therefore they are not included in the EL Progress report.
Suspension Rate
The District has made strides in reducing the suspension rate, which now stands at 3.3%, a decrease of 2.4 percentage points. In addition, There was a decline of 6.3 percentage points in the rate for Foster Youth by 9.5 percentage points and for Homeless Youth by 7.5 percentage points. The District experienced a 1.6 percentage point decline for Multilingual Learners, while Latino Students maintained their rate of 5.8% and Students with Disabilities also maintained their rate of 7.5%.
Academic Indicator
In terms of academic performance, this year's California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) outcomes for 11th-grade students have shown declines in both English Language Arts (ELA) and Mathematics. The results indicate that all students are 29.2 points above standard in ELA, yet this reflects a decline. In Mathematics, all students are 42.4 points below standard. Additionally, 2024 marks the first year of reporting on the Science indicator, establishing a baseline for future assessments.
“While we celebrate the progress made in certain areas, we recognize that there is much work ahead to ensure that every student in the San Mateo Union High School District graduates and that every student thrives. We remain committed to addressing the needs of all students, particularly our English Learners and those from vulnerable backgrounds,” said Superintendent Randall Booker.
