SMUHSD Humanizing Pedagogy Instructional Framework
What is Humanizing Pedagogy?
The goal of humanizing pedagogy is to cultivate deeper, authentic connections between educators and students. Humanizing pedagogy also aims to foster critical consciousness, ultimately leading to outcomes that promote liberation and social justice. By prioritizing the development of meaningful relationships and equitable learning environments, humanizing pedagogy seeks to foster students’ agency and support their holistic growth and development. Through this approach, educators create learning environments that are not only academically rigorous but also supportive, equitable, and empowering for all students (del Carmen Salazar, 2013).
What is an Instructional Framework?
An instructional framework is a coherent set of shared expectations that guide our vision for curriculum, instruction, learning environment, and feedback and appraisal.
The purpose of a common instructional framework will lead to coherent instructional programs, professional development, and allocation of resources across the district. As a result of this coherence and shared vision, the framework will support our goal to eliminate disproportionality in student achievement outcomes for our BIPOC and other historically oppressed groups of students.
The framework outlines the underlying principles and offers specific strategies for educators to create humanizing experiences for students. Moreover, it establishes a shared vocabulary, enabling us to systematize our understanding of equity, antiracism, and ultimately the implementation of humanizing pedagogy within our classrooms.
We asked our district community: what are your dreams for our students, educators, and schools?
