B.A. in Physical Education and Dance M.A. in Dance Education

Ms. A. Barrios

My name is Ms. Barrios and I’ve been teaching at Capuchino High School for 24 years. I grew up in Southern California, graduated from Whitney High School and later relocated to San Francisco where I attended SFSU. I earned my B.A. in Physical Education and Dance as well as my teaching credential from SFSU. I also hold an M.A. in Dance Education from CSULB. My teaching career began at Parkside in 1993 before moving to Capuchino in 1995. Under the guidance of Gordy Young I was able to establish a dance program on this campus which has since been incorporated into the IB Elective Program.

I have been trained in multiple dance disciplines including, ballet, Mexican Folklorico, Flamenco, Kathak, Afro-Haitian, Jazz, and Modern Dance Techniques. I have also trained for and completed Bay Breakers (12 times), San Jose Rock’n’Roll Half Marathon, multiple 5k, 10k, and 12k races, karate and have crossed the Molokai Channel with my outrigger canoe club, Ho’okahi Pu’uwai. I love to study fitness and health, choreographing, watching my students blossom into wonderful, creative beings, and I believe in the fitness basics, eat your greens, drink plenty of water, exercise until you sweat, and lots of sleep.

My teaching experiences started when I was in Elementary school when my mom, who is also a teacher asked me to teach her students a Mexican Folklorico dance.  Since that time I have taught or coached in Elementary Schools, Middle Schools, Community Centers, Workshops, choreographed for musicals, and have coached cheerleaders, flag football and t-ball. I knew early on that teaching, sharing and being around young people was what I wanted to do. I have 3 children and live in Hayward, California.  My hobbies are reading, exercise, and enjoy watching historical fiction movies and dramas on Netflix.
