    San Mateo Union High School District's Gifted and Talented Enrichment (GATE) Program (formerly known as the Gifted and Talented Education Program) is designed to provide students with opportunities to explore various interests, passions, and experiences that supplement their academic and social experience at school.

    Historically, student entrance into GATE programs has relied on academic achievement (primarily standardized test results). However, we recognize that opportunities, or lack thereof, play a significant role in student development and achievement.

    Manifestations of students’ giftedness appear in a variety of ways and depend on the opportunities afforded to students. In order to meet our District’s charge to eliminate opportunity gaps and institutional barriers, our GATE program will be an open-access program. It will be available to support the growth, development, and enrichment of all District students.

    Our program is coordinated in partnership with the GATE Parents’ Group, which offers additional opportunities to students and their families, such as college and career readiness classes, summer enrichment courses, guest speakers, and events for families.

    While we have had the outlined set of criteria (on the next page) by which a student may be recommended for the program by their families, peers, and school staff, no student will be denied eligibility. Students and families will be allowed to self-select into the GATE program; site GATE coordinators will continue to solicit staff for recommendations, and advertise the program widely to the entire student body.

    Idenitfying and Recommending Students to the Program

    The following descriptors can be used to identify and recommend students to the GATE program, but are neither exclusive nor all-encompassing. Any District student may participate in the program.

    • This student is an observant and an independent thinker.
    • This student produces advanced ideas/products. Student who consistently functions at advanced academic levels in any/all subject area(s) or standardized tests.
    • An English Learner student who has demonstrated rapid growth in the English language and is proficient in their native language(s).

    • Student who characteristically perceives significant similarities or differences within the environment, challenges assumptions, and produces unique alternative solutions.
    • This student demonstrates unconventional and/or imaginative ideas, products, solutions.

    • Student who displays the characteristic behavior necessary for extraordinary leadership
    • This student shows good judgment, foresees consequences, is responsible, self-confident and articulate.

    Outstanding Talent in Visual and Performing Arts

    • Student who originates, performs, produces, or responds at exceptionally high levels in any of the arts.
    • This student is observant, well-coordinated, creative, and imaginative.

    Verbal Linguistic
    Refers to an individual's ability to analyze information and produce work that involves oral and written language, such as speeches, books, and emails.

    Describes the ability to develop equations and proofs, make calculations, and solveabstract problems.

    Visual Spatial
    Allows people to comprehend maps and other types of graphical information

    Enables individuals to produce and make meaning of different types of sound.

    Refers to the ability to identify and distinguish among different types of plants, animals, andweather formations found in the natural world.

    Entails using one's own body to create products or solve problems.

    Reflects an ability to recognize and understand other people's moods, desires, motivations,and intentions.

    Refers to people's ability to recognize and assess those same characteristics within themselves.
