About the Board

The trustees on the board of the San Mateo Union High School District are elected officials from all walks of life who come together to make important decisions concerning the school district. Their individual and unique perspectives contribute to the educated opinions that influence the board’s resolutions to district wide problems.

Robert H. Griffin

President (Term Expires 2026)

Robert H. Griffin has been on the board since January 1996.  Mr. Griffin believes that education is the key to equality and has focused his attention on meeting the needs of all students. Prior to joining the school board he volunteered in the classroom through Junior Achievement and has been active in local volunteer organizations all his life.

Mr. Griffin is managing partner of Williams, Adley & Company, LLP. He has practiced public accounting for over 30 years. He graduated from the University of San Francisco with a BS in Accounting and obtained his CPA license in 1981. He completed the CSBA Master of Boardsmanship Program in 1997.

Mr. Griffin is a proud graduate of San Mateo High School and was born, raised and educated in San Mateo. He and his family reside in San Mateo. 

Teri Chavez

Teri Chavez joined the SMUHSD Board in December 2022. Prior to her joining the SMUHSD Board of Trustees, Teri served on the San Bruno Park School District Board (SBPSD) of Trustees from 2018 - 2022.  Teri is passionate about student achievement with a focus on equity, ensuring that every student has the tools they need to be successful.

Teri has worked at Pacific Gas and Electric Company as an Expert Business Analyst for almost 30 years.  She grew up in Tuolumne County and graduated from San Francisco State University with a degree in Economics.

Teri has always been involved as a parent volunteer serving in various roles and capacities, including PTA Treasurer; school site councils at Rollingwood Elementary School, Parkside Middle School and Capuchino High School; LCAP & DELAC SBPSD District committees; 7-11 Advisory Committee for surplus property; and SMUHSD Equity Advisory Committee. 

Teri has completed all of the Masters in Governance courses facilitated by CSBA (California School Board Association) focused on school board governance. In 2017, she received the PTA Founders’ Day Award which is awarded to outstanding parent volunteers.   

Teri lives in San Bruno with her husband and two daughters, one who is currently attending and the other, a recent graduate.

Jennifer Jacobson

Clerk (Term Expires 2026)

Jennifer Jacobson joined the SMUHSD Board in December 2022. Prior to that she has volunteered for the PTA at her children's schools in San Mateo. She currently serves on the board of the Peninsula Multifaith Coalition and has held leadership positions in both her church and the interfaith community for many years.

She earned a MS in Nutritional Science from Brigham Young University and worked as a registered dietitian specializing in eating disorders. Since 2008, she has owned and operated a portrait photography business. Ms. Jacobson has five children, and her oldest two are currently students in the District. She and her family reside in San Mateo.

Ms. Ligia Andrade Zúñiga

Ligia Andrade Zúñiga, M.P.A. believes that education opens the path to opportunity. She has dedicated her focus on educating, advocating for, and empowering individuals with disabilities and young people of color around higher education, reproductive health rights, civil rights, and disability justice. For over 20 years she has served on many commissions, boards, and committees such as the San Mateo County Commission on the Status of Women, Teen Pregnancy Prevention Coalition of San Mateo County, San Mateo County Health Commission, California State Independent Living Council, and the San Mateo County Commission on Disabilities. Ligia holds a Bachelor's Degree in Human Services with an emphasis in Administration and Counseling, and a Masters Degree in Public Administration from Notre Dame de Namur University in Belmont, California. Ligia is a parent of two graduates of SMUHSD and resides in San Mateo.

Greg Land

Mr. Land has been on the San Mateo Union High School District Board since December 2015 and before his service on the SMUHSD Board he served on the Burlingame Elementary School Board. He has been an educator for all of his professional life, as a Teacher, Assistant Principal and currently the Principal at Burlingame Intermediate School (BIS). Mr. Land grew up in Southern California and graduated from the University of California, Los Angeles. He and his family reside in Burlingame.
