About the Robert H. Griffin Leadership Award

The Robert H. Griffin Leadership Award honors individuals in the San Mateo Union High School District whose leadership exemplifies excellence, equity, and commitment to student success. This award is named in recognition of longtime SMUHSD Board Member Robert H. Griffin, a deeply rooted community leader whose lifelong commitment to public education reflects both personal experience and professional conviction.

A proud graduate of San Mateo High School - class of 1967, Robert was born, raised, and educated in San Mateo, and continues to reside in and serve the community. Since joining the SMUHSD Board of Trustees in January 1996, Robert has been a steadfast voice for student achievement, innovative programs, fiscal responsibility and community engagement. His leadership style, rooted in collaboration, accountability and equity, has set a high standard for educational leadership.

Presented twice each year, the award recognizes District leaders who demonstrate:

  • Excellence in their professional roles, with a tangible impact on student learning and school culture.
  • Leadership that inspires, motivates, and engages colleagues, students, and the community.
  • Commitment to equity by actively working to ensure fair, inclusive and high-quality educational opportunities for all students.
