The San Mateo Union High School District is proud to honor Dr. Samia Shoman as the inaugural recipient of the Robert H. Griffin Leadership Award; an award that recognizes leadership grounded in excellence, equity, and an unwavering commitment to student success. Few leaders embody these values as fully, as consistently, or as profoundly as Dr. Shoman. Her impact on students, families, colleagues, and the broader community is extraordinary, deeply human, and transformative. Excellence in Professional Role Across every role she has held, teacher, district administrator, program founder, and now Principal of The Bridge Academy, Dr. Shoman exemplifies excellence driven by vision, action, and heart. She is one of the rare educators who can say she created a school, and not just any school, but a nationally recognized, WASC-accredited model of newcomer support, love, and humanizing education. What began in 2016 as a single program for older multilingual learners has grown, under her leadership, into The Bridge Academy, a full school rooted in the values of In Lak’ech, where belonging, safety, justice, and hope guide every decision and every classroom experience. Her colleagues describe her as steadfast, visionary, compassionate, and deeply attuned to the needs and dreams of her students.

Dr. Shoman’s excellence is not theoretical, it is visible in her daily actions. She visits classrooms to support instruction, builds student schedules by hand to remove barriers to graduation, picks up food from Peace Pantry each Friday, and is often the first to arrive and the last to leave. She leads meetings, mentors teachers, cleans the Wellness Center when needed, and creates school systems that are innovative, inclusive, and student-centered. Her students trust her; they see her not just as a principal but as a source of safety, dignity, and unwavering support. 

Her broader district contributions are equally profound. She was instrumental in developing Ethnic Studies, expanding AVID and multilingual learner supports, launching the ADELANTE Parent Conference, and championing instructional pathways that open doors for historically underserved students. 

Leadership that Inspires, Motivates, and Unites 

Dr. Shoman leads through example, humility, courage, and boundless love. Her leadership style is rooted in listening, collaboration, and integrity. In conversations, she listens with full presence; in meetings, she lifts and honors every voice; in moments of crisis, she acts with calm, clarity, and compassion. Whether she is coaching a student in crisis, checking in with a teen mom during labor, supporting a teacher during a difficult moment, or greeting students each morning with joy and affirmation, she is a leader who stands beside her community, never above it.

Her colleagues describe her as “the heart of Bridge Academy,” a leader whose presence brings purpose, unity, and hope. She sets high expectations while creating the conditions for staff to excel. She inspires innovation, encourages teachers to take risks, and brings people together to solve problems with a shared commitment to justice and student well-being. She is, in the words of one nominator, the district’s “guiding light”; a mentor, model, and anchor for educators across SMUHSD. 

Her leadership is also courageous. She makes difficult decisions when they are right for students, even when adults may resist. She embodies the spirit of a “warm demander,” holding her community to high expectations rooted in deep belief in their potential.

Commitment to Equity in Education

Equity is not something Dr. Shoman talks about, it is the foundation of who she is and how she leads. Her entire career has centered multilingual learners, newcomer students, families navigating unfamiliar systems, and youth who have often been marginalized or underestimated. She builds bridges, literal and metaphorical, for students who arrive with interrupted formal education, limited English, or the weight of personal hardship. 

Through Bridge Academy she has created a school designed specifically to remove systemic barriers and offer students a path to graduation, college, and hope. Equity in her practice is both structural and deeply human:

• She ensures access to food, clothing, wellness supports, after-school programs, and culturally responsive instruction.
• She advocates fiercely for staffing, resources, and pathways that honor student dignity, identity, and potential.
• She shows up for students beyond the walls of school, supporting them in court, in hospitals, at immigration hearings, even in delivery rooms when they have no family present.
• She coordinates holiday gifts for every student, reminding those far from home that they are loved and never alone.
• She hires former Bridge students to work at the school, creating an intergenerational ecosystem of mentorship and possibility.

Through these actions, she creates not just equitable opportunities, but equitable outcomes, community transformation, and lifelong belonging.

A Leader Defined by Humanity

Across all nominations, one theme rises again and again: Samia’s leadership is defined by love, courage, integrity, and humanity. The stories shared by her colleagues describe a leader who:

• Treats every student as family.
• Inspires staff to be their fullest, most compassionate selves.
• Shows up, in ordinary moments and extraordinary ones, with unwavering presence.
• Turns small gestures into lifelong impacts.

Her nominators wrote that Bridge students return years later seeking her guidance; that alumni consider the school their home; that her leadership transforms lives not through grand gestures but through daily acts of care, consistency, and conviction.

A Most Fitting Inaugural Honoree

In every way, Dr. Samia Shoman embodies the legacy of Robert H. Griffin, a leader dedicated to equity, collaboration, integrity, and educational excellence for all students.

She is a visionary who builds what does not yet exist. She is a champion for those too often overlooked. She is a model of community-rooted, justice-centered leadership. She is a beacon of hope for students, families, and colleagues across SMUHSD.
