If You Test Positive for an Infectious Illness

 

SMUHSD continues to follow the CDPH’s guidance on Respiratory Viruses for all students and staff. 

Stay home if you have symptoms (e.g., flu, RSV, COVID-19), until you have not had a fever for 24 hours without using fever reducing medication AND other Respiratory Symptoms are mild and improving.​

Mask when you are around other people indoors for the 10 days after you become sick or test positive (if no symptoms). Day 0 is symptom onset date or positive test date.  Additionally, please see further instructions below:

Staff: Complete the Infectious Illness Staff Reporting 2026-2027. Contact your supervisor to alert them to your absence. Enter your absence into Aesop. Details that will be needed include the following:

  • Date Symptoms started
  • Date you tested (swab date, not results date)
  • Last day on campus 
  • Anyone in your household attend or work at any of our sites? Please list names and locations

Students: Complete your school's Attendance Reporting Form. Email your school’s Health Aide and provide:

  • Date symptoms started
  • Date you tested (swab date, not results date)
  • Last day on campus 
  • Anyone in your household attend or work at any of our sites? Please list names and locations

Stay Home if you Get Sick
Stay home if you are experiencing respiratory infection symptoms or have tested positive for an infectious illness. If your test is negative but you continue to have symptoms, test again 24-48 hours later. Please also refer to the CDPH’s When to Keep Your Child Home from School for other symptoms.

Exposure notifications
CDPH continues to recommend that schools consider a general notification to the entire school community during times of elevated community transmission of infectious illness. Community notification of increased transmission can serve as a reminder to monitor for symptoms, use available rapid testing/treatment options, and prevent further spread.
 

The District will  notify staff members in compliance with Cal-OSHA during times of elevated transmission. These notifications will be disseminated to your email and/or text via our communications system, ParentSquare.

 

Facemasks
The San Mateo Union High School District follows the guidance of the California Department of Public Health and San Mateo County regarding face masks. Masks are available in the health office and by request. Students and staff returning after a recent positive test should continue to wear a mask for a full 10 days while indoors.

Expired Covid Tests

The California Department of Public Health endorses the emergency use of over-the counter COVID-19 Tests beyond their FDA authorized expiration. This blanket extension, subject to appropriate internal control development * during testing, is valid until CDPH posts that the emergency extension has ended, at which point participants should cease using tests beyond their printed expiration dates.
