José Gōmez to be Recommended as New Principal of the San Mateo Union High School District's (SMUHSD) Capuchino High School

April 19, 2022 - San Mateo, Calif. - Mr. José A. Gōmez will be recommended to the Board of Trustees to serve as the new principal of Capuchino High School (CHS) at the April 21, 2022 Board meeting. With Board approval, starting July 1, 2022, Gōmez will become the new leader of CHS which serves approximately 1,100 students and their families. Gōmez will follow in the footsteps of Mr. Jesse Boise who served at the school as principal since July, 2018.

Mr. Gōmez has been in education since 2005, when he began his career as an Intern Special Education teacher with the San Francisco Unified School District. In 2007, Gōmez moved to the South San Francisco Unified School District. In 2012, he became an Assistant Principal of El Camino High School in South San Francisco. Mr. Gōmez was hired in 2015 by SMUHSD to serve as Assistant Principal at Mills High School in Millbrae where he has worked for the past seven years. Gōmez received a Masters of Art in Education Administration from San Francisco State University in 2014 and a Masters of Art in Learning and Instruction from the University of San Francisco in 2007.

Mr. Gōmez graduated from Capuchino High School in 1997. He and his family have been involved in community activities since his family and extended family moved to San Bruno in the 1970s. While at Capuchino, Mr. Gomez was a star baseball player and he continued his baseball career after graduating from high school as a member of the Florida Marlins minor league system.

“I am excited to begin directly serving the students and families of Capuchino High School,” says Gōmez. “This return to my alma mater as its leader grants me the opportunity to give back to the community that has given so much to me. I have lived in San Bruno practically my entire life and I am honored to serve the Mustang Family,” he added.

"Being a high school principal is one of the most demanding and rewarding jobs in education," states Dr. Kevin Skelly, Superintendent.  "Based on his outstanding work as an Assistant Principal at Mills High and his dedication to the San Bruno community, I am confident that Mr. Gōmez will be an exceptional leader for Capuchino and will build on the present success of the school. His personal story, exceptional talent, and his deep roots in our community make him worthy of this opportunity to lead Capuchino High School."
