SMUHSD Announces Dr. Michael Jones as New Aragon Principal
May 24, 2024 - The San Mateo Union High School District Board of Trustees approved a contract to hire Michael Jones, Ed.D. as the new Principal of Aragon High School. Dr. Jones is replacing Valerie Arbizu, who will join the District Office to serve as the District’s Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS)/504 Coordinator. His start date is July 1, 2024.
Dr. Jones received his Ed.D. in Educational Leadership from Gardner-Webb College. He received his Masters in Educational Administration and Supervision from Virginia Commonwealth University and his B.A. in Sociology and Elementary Education from the College of William & Mary. Additionally, Dr. Jones received his diploma in Biblical and Theological Studies from the Calvary Bible Institute.
Dr. Jones comes to our District most recently from Lowell High School, where he served as Principal since 2022. Prior to that he has held several positions in the San Francisco Unified School District (a district of 50,000 students) including, Assistant Principal at Balboa High School; Interim Principal at The Academy - San Francisco @ McAteer; and Interim Assistant Principal at Balboa and Galileo High Schools. Dr. Jones has also served as Executive Principal at Jose Antonio Vargas Elementary in the Mountain View Whisman School District; Cluster Manager, Abu Dhabi Education Council; and as a Senior Education Consultant at the Shakers and Movers Education Foundation.
Dr. Jones’ experience also includes teaching from 1994-2004.

I believe academic success, personal and professional growth are equivalent to being a lifelong learner. I pride myself on leading outfront with a strong sense of community, consistent and transparent communication, personal and professional integrity and a collaborative spirit that brings community members together in a way that guarantees incremental growth and change for the greater good of students.”
