Program Options for Newcomer Students

Multilingual Learner (ML) Newcomer and ML Standard Programs
The San Mateo Union High School District offers both Newcomer and Standard programs to support Multilingual Learner (ML) students. Schools with a Newcomer Program provide specialized classes and support for students in their first 0-3 years in U.S. schools, while all schools offer the Standard Program with integrated English language instruction in grade-level classes.
The ML Standard Program is offered at all SMUHSD high schools.
The ML Newcomer Program is offered at the following SMUHSD High Schools:
- Bridge Academy (San Mateo)
- Capuchino High School (San Bruno)
- Hillsdale High School (San Mateo)
- San Mateo High School
Differences Between the ML Newcomer and ML Standard Programs
All high schools have ML Specialists, Family Engagement Coordinators, and Counselors for support and student success. Families can choose the program that will be the best fit for their student!
