Multilingual Learner (ML) Newcomer and ML Standard Programs

The San Mateo Union High School District offers both Newcomer and Standard programs to support Multilingual Learner (ML) students. Schools with a Newcomer Program provide specialized classes and support for students in their first 0-3 years in U.S. schools, while all schools offer the Standard Program with integrated English language instruction in grade-level classes.

The ML Standard Program is offered at all SMUHSD high schools.

The ML Newcomer Program is offered at the following SMUHSD High Schools: 

  • Bridge Academy (San Mateo) 
  • Capuchino High School (San Bruno)
  • Hillsdale High School (San Mateo)
  • San Mateo High School

Differences Between the ML Newcomer and ML Standard Programs

All high schools have ML Specialists, Family Engagement Coordinators, and Counselors for support and student success. Families can choose the program that will be the best fit for their student!
 
ML Newcomer Program ML Standard Program
Enrolled in small English, Math, History, and Science classes with other newly arrived students that are learning the English language at developing levels Enrolled in standard content classes with peers of mixed and varied language proficiencies, many of which are English-only, fluent, and advanced multilingual learners
Focus on confidence and foundation building, while practicing speaking, listening, reading, and writing in English every day Newcomers enrolled in Community and Literacy Foundations class for to support their designated English development, based on student’s English proficiency and literacy
Personalized learning i-Ready program for English literacy skills development More independent work in English and less intensive language support, with access to English language development embedded within general instruction and large classes
Access to ML School Counselors for academic planning, graduation, and college/career support, in partnership with Newcomer Social Workers to help with adjusting to school, emotional & social support, transitions, and connections to community resources Access to site School Counselors for academic planning, graduation, and college/career support in partnership with site Wellness Services for emotional and social support
