ML Newcomer Program

The Newcomer Program is a supportive program for Multilingual Learner (ML) students in their first 0–3 years in U.S. schools that focuses on learning English while participating in grade-level classes such as English, Math, Science, History, and other courses required for graduation, all through specialized English development instruction, strong relationships, and multilingual supports.
ML Newcomer Program offered at the following SMUHSD High Schools:
- Bridge Academy
- Capuchino
- Hillsdale
- San Mateo
Access to:
- Small classes with other newly arrived students
- Strong support for English + academics
- Focus on confidence and foundation building
- Designated English Development classes based on English proficiency and literacy
- Practicing speaking, listening, reading, and writing in English everyday while learning content.
- Personalized learning i-Ready program for English literacy skills development.
