Local Education Agency Billing Option Program (LEA BOP)
Supporting Student Through School-Based Health Services
At SMUHSD, we are committed to ensuring students receive the services and supports they need to succeed in school. Through the Local Educational Agency Billing Option Program (LEA BOP), school districts may receive reimbursement for certain health-related services provided to students with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) when those services are documented in the student's IEP.
LEA BOP helps school districts access available funding for eligible services while ensuring students continue to receive the supports identified through the IEP process.
What Does This Mean for Families?
No Change in Services: Students will continue to receive the services and supports identified in their IEP. LEA BOP does not change the type, frequency, or quality of services provided.
No Cost to Families: Participation in LEA BOP does not result in any out-of-pocket costs to families and does not reduce a student's educational services.
Supporting Student Services: Reimbursement received through LEA BOP helps support school-based health-related services provided to eligible students with IEPs.
Family Participation
Families of students with IEPs will receive information regarding LEA BOP through the Special Education process, including the Assessment Plan and/or Parent Consent process. Additional information and participation options will be provided to families when applicable.
Family participation helps SMUHSD access available reimbursement funding that can be used to support eligible school-based services for students receiving Special Education services.
Privacy and Confidentiality
SMUHSD is committed to protecting the privacy and confidentiality of student information. Information shared through LEA BOP is protected by federal and state privacy laws, including FERPA and HIPAA, where applicable, and is handled in accordance with established confidentiality and security requirements.

Which students are eligible for LEA BOP?
LEA BOP applies only to students with an Individualized Education Program (IEP) who receive eligible health-related services documented within their IEP.
Will my child's services change if I choose not to participate?
