Career Technical Education (CTE)

  • In Career and Technical Education courses, students explore possible future career paths and gain career-readiness skills such as communication, collaboration, critical thinking and problem-solving skills that will serve them well in any path they choose. These classes combine rigorous academics with industry-specific technical skills. Guest speakers, field trips, job shadowing and other work-based learning opportunities give students an understanding of what these professions really entail.

    There is a one-year Career and Technical Education graduation requirement. Students can continue on to take a second and sometimes third year in our pathways. San Mateo Union High School District offers multi-year Career and Technical Education pathways in the following industry sectors: Arts, Media and Entertainment; Building Construction Trades; Education, Child Development and Family Services; Engineering and Architecture; Health Science and Medical Technology; Hospitality, Tourism and Recreation; Information and Communication Technology, and Manufacturing and Product Development.

    Career and Technical Education teachers work closely with industry professionals and many do externships in industry to make sure the curriculum reflects current industry standards.

  • Advanced Technology II

    The CTE Advanced Technology II course will provide an advanced platform for fabricating and forming materials, using advanced design principles, materials selection, 3D modeling software, rapid prototyping, and CNC machining. Students will learn to communicate effectively using the terminology common in the product development industry. Students will work with lab mentors and gain exposure to professionals working within the industry.

  • Exploring Technology I

    Exploring Technology 1-2 is a course designed to introduce the student to the Industrial Technology / Engineering Pathway. In this year long course, students will explore the many areas of technology by participating in six-week integrated courses including: Drafting/CAD, Manufacturing -Woods, Manufacturing -Metals, Electronics, Applied Physics, and Transportation. Students will perform experiments, participate in lab activities, and construct personal and group projects to illustrate technological concepts. Field trips and guest speakers representing various technological industries will also be included. Mathematical and scientific concepts will be integrated and applied throughout the curriculum. Upon completion, students will be well equipped to make informed decisions regarding this curricular pathway.

  • Advanced Engineering Technology

    An advanced course that develops a mastery of the design and construction skills taught in Engineering Tech I, with a focus on ways to reduce waste and energy use in the construction/production process.  Students will be challenged to design and redesign products in a way that makes them more efficient or use sustainable or recycled / recyclable materials.  Students will also learn to communicate effectively using the terminology and symbolism that is common in the produce design, manufacturing, and construction industries.

  • Conservation Strategies

    This course highlights those careers related to Energy and Conservation that require skills related to marketing, promotion, sales, public relations, and finance including skills needed for the sales of photovoltaic systems, energy retrofits, and efficient vehicles.  Students will learn the skills to build and present effective sales campaigns as well as the essential computer and analytic skills used to develop and evaluate programs that lead to behavioral changes that reduce carbon footprints.

  • Advanced Construction

    This is a one-year course designed to increase the student's knowledge of constructing residential and light commercial structures.  The topics covered build on the foundation material introduced in Construction I.  The emphasis of the course is on advanced construction techniques, finished carpentry, project management, and sustainable building (green building).

  • Construction I

    This is a one-year course includes units on the use of tools, materials, and processes to build structures.  Home remodeling and renovation, major emphases in this program, rely on an integration of the academic core.  Math and science concepts are infused throughout the course as are language arts skills through the use of a notebook, report writing, and speeches of demonstration.  Thinking and listening skills, peer teaching, and outlining skills will be used in appropriate phases on the course.

  • Advanced Healthcare Science & Medical Technology

    The course will provide a solid foundation for the medical, science, reading, writing and math skills that are used in the allied health professions as well as explore, in depth, the emergency medical services industry.  Students will develop manipulative and problem solving skills necessary for the initial evaluation and stabilization of victims of emergency illness or trauma as well as First Responder level training for fire service, emergency, law enforcement, civil, and industrial personnel.

  • Introduction to Healthcare Science & Medical Technology

    This course will provide a solid foundation for the medical, science, reading, writing, and math skills that are used in the allied health professions, while exploring the many career opportunities in the healthcare industry.  Topics of study include medical terminology, human body systems and diseases, as well as medical ethics, conduct, legal responsibilities, and general medical safety.

  • Green Energy and Conservation I

    This course is an overview of the scientific, technical, economic, and social issues that drive energy production and use. While introducing students to the physics of energy, the course will teach students to measure and monitor electricity consumption and to understand the principles behind emerging power-generating technologies. Students will learn to build simple circuits and low-power generators and be able to describe their devices using appropriate technical terms.

  • Foods and Nutrition I

    This comprehensive course is designed to help students understand how food choices impact health. Students learn fundamental scientific principles of nutrients and foods. This applied laboratory-based course is designed to educate students about the functional components of foods and food preparation including nutrient composition, analysis and preservation in addition to food safety, sensory evaluation, and quality control.
