Music Appreciation and Community Band Classes
AFTERNOON AT THE OPERA
This passionate opera appreciation class sets the stage for a more complete enjoyment of the live Met Opera broadcasts at Bay Area theaters and adds intriguing topics about opera in general. Those who’ve wondered what opera is about, as well as those who’ve held season tickets for years, are sure to relish this class.
10/ 07: Turandot by Giacomo Puccini. The icy Chinese princess, known for beheading her suitors, is melted by a mysterious commoner. Features famous tenor aria “Nessun Dorma”.
10/14: “Shattering Ceilings: Women Change Agents and Representation in Opera” with guest speaker Jazmine Harnishfeger.
10/21: Manon by Jules Massenet. Manon tells the story of an impulsive young woman drawn into the Belle Époque world of male desire. She recklessly chooses luxury over love and pays the ultimate price.
10/28: Akhnaten by Philip Glass. “Ancient Egypt in Glass: Ritual Representation and the Impact of Akhnaten”. The third of Glass’ trilogy of ‘portrait’ operas exploring science (Einstein), politics (Gandhi), and religion (Egyptian pharaoh Akhnaten).
11/04: Madama Butterfly by Giacomo Puccini. Undoubtedly one of the most beautiful and comprehensive portraits of a woman in the history of opera. There is little action; just the slow poetry of the soul.
11/11: No class. Veterans Day Holiday.
11/18: No class
11/25: Doña Francisquita by Amado Vives. Castanets, fandangos, and parade of singable tunes punctuate this delightful Spanish operetta.
12/02: Wozzeck by Alban Berg with guest speaker mazza-soprano Deborah Rosengaus. The opera follows Wozzeck, victimized by war and the woman he loves, as he slides through a PTSD haze into madness. Berg, who was called to military service while writing the opera, infuses the score with realistic, powerful emotion.
12/09: Holiday Opera Sing Along and Party
