THE HOUSE ON MANGO STREET

A coming-of-age story based on the award-winning novel by Mexican-American author Sandra Cisneros and adapted for stage by Amy Ludwig, Mango Street is written from the perspective of a teenage Latina who struggles with her life in a Chicano and Puerto Rican neighborhood of Chicago.

The House on Mango Street is directed by Seth Wright in collaboration with Alexis Becerra and is produced by Allison Gamlen. Lighting design by Sean Lee. Performances will be in Hillsdale's Little Theater.  Hillsdale is located at 3115 Del Monte Street, San Mateo, with the Little Theater located on the 31st Avenue side of the campus.

Synopsis:

Esperanza wishes to escape her family's impoverished life in the small red house on Mango Street and one day return to rescue her loved ones. This beloved story is an account of life in an immigrant community addressing themes of racism, sexism, sexuality, sexual abuse, feminism, and Chicana culture. The story combines old Mexican traditions with modern American customs and explores the plight of marginalized Latinos struggling to survive in a dominantly white country.
