Nancy Kane - March recipient of the Classified Golden Apple Award

Congratulations to Nancy Kane, CTE Career Coordinator at San Mateo High School. Nancy is the March recipient of the Classified Golden Apple Award and she was nominated by several of her colleagues and this is what they had to say about her:

"Nancy has done an OUTSTANDING job as CTE Career Coordinator. She has taken CTE to the next level by connecting with the community. She has set up field trips for our students-LightGrid, Computer History Museum, Skyline College (Automotive Program), Gilead, etc. She sets up campus visits for industry and vocational programs. She works closely with CTE teachers and Special Education teachers. Her other hat is as Service Learning Coordinator, Nancy advertises volunteer opportunities for our students, has helped to revamp and revise our College and Career Center web pages. She hosted a community and vocation college fair last spring and a job fair for our students to find summer employment. She is hardworking and dedicated to helping our students. We are lucky to have her!"

"Nancy has booked monthly career speakers for my program. These speakers enrich and extend instruction beyond the classroom for students. They also give students opportunities to learn about career possibilities in CTE Foods & Hospitality Industry Sector. As a result of Nancy's hard work, the Foods & Hospitality Program has formed partnerships with companies like Casa Sanchez and food science company, Mattson. This year students participated in a Salsa Challenge and Flavored Popcorn Project in collaboration with these companies. Most recently, Nancy developed a partnership with Jesse Bustos at SFO. Jesse came to present in all my classes and spoke about the many career opportunities at the airport. Nancy set up a special field trip for my classes to tour the airport and attend the high school job faire on February 27. This is a wonderful opportunity for our students; one that will be life changing for all who take advantage. Nancy made this possible. She is a treasure!"

"As soon as Nancy Kane transitioned into her new position of Career and Volunteer work, we have seen an increase in student participation in both the workforce and volunteer opportunities. Recently Nancy led an effort to communicate opportunities to students. She created a number of flyers that helped promote these opportunities, initially only shared with the CTE folks, but later rolled out to counselors. It is her work both in public and private that will create wonderful opportunities for students."

"Nancy Kane is an incredible member on our counseling team. She continues to use her master networking skills to bring engaging guest speakers to San Mateo High with the goal of broadening our students' understanding of new and exciting career fields. These guest range from senators and doctors, to skilled trades people, to technology gurus, to military service people, and many, many more. Oftentimes, these speakers are paired with field trips. Nancy has recently established a partnership with San Francisco Airport that has provided our students with paid internship opportunities, as well as an phenomenal venue for displaying their unique artwork. Nancy is an incredible thought partner and support for our CTE teachers as they work to provide students with real-world work experience and necessary skills development. She has even used her connections with Jewish Vocational Services (JVS) to present to our Latino Parent Organization about apprenticeship programs that support lucrative careers in the trade industries. Overall, Nancy has proven herself to be tireless, selfless, and fearless when it comes to bringing quality career opportunities to our students."

Congratulations Nancy!
