Student to Staff Success Story: Lester Membreno

Lester Membreno - Student to Staff Success Story

Lester went from student to staff in less than two years.  How did he do it? Let’s find out!

Tell us a little bit about yourself.  Where are you from?

I was born in Italy and then we moved to Spain and Nicaragua.

What classes have you taken at SMAS?

I took High Intermediate ESL with Alesha.  My English improved a lot with her - with homework every day and tests.  I could start communicating. Then I took Low Advanced ESL with Jean and then with Jessica. They teach the same level.  It didn’t make me feel bad to repeat. It wasn’t the right time to change levels. It helped me build my skill and knowledge of English.  Then I took Katherine’s High Advanced ESL class and Patricia’s Intermediate Writing class - for one year. My writing improved.

You did the Student Ambassador Program and did other volunteer work.  Tell us about that.

I didn’t know you could be a volunteer till Tia visited Alesha’s class.  I started as a Student Ambassador in May 2018. I really enjoyed being a Student Ambassador.  I helped Carlota with High School Diploma and GED graduations. It’s the best way I can repay the school all it gave to us - free development and English.   I couldn’t communicate before. My English has improved so much.

When did you officially start working at the Adult School?

I officially started working here in October 2019.  I work at the front desk.

In all this, I have been learning different systems and programs.  I try to give my best to the people.

What do you like about working at SMAS?

We have a lot of dedication to help the students complete their goals. Also, SMAS has a good environment to work with different people.  Here I have the opportunity to meet people from all over the globe.

Do you have any advice for other students?

My Advice for the students is:  Do your best. It doesn't matter how long you have to do something, but your time will come soon.

Never give up!!
