Summer Athletic Team Workouts

Dear Parents and Student-Athletes:

The San Mateo Union High School recognizes that athletics is an integral part of the high school experience. Proper training and conditioning is essential to provide a safe environment. The SMUHSD Athletic Department has developed outdoor facility use recommendations using the San Mateo County Phase 2 guidelines that allow student athletes to condition and develop skills while practicing social distancing. This is completely optional and is not a requirement for trying out for
the high school team.

All students must be cleared with a current clearance packet and physical. Coaches will be using the facilities while supervising their athletes during their designated time they will reserve.

Each session will have 15 minutes of transition time to ensure no overlapping of groups. Each
school will designate drop off and pick up locations that are appropriate to each site’s layout.

Pre-Workout:

  • Any person with possible COVID-19 symptoms should not be allowed to take part in
workouts and should contact his or her primary care provider or health-care
    professional for medical advice.

  • Vulnerable individuals or those with health conditions or other risk factors should not
oversee or participate in any workouts. Higher Risk individuals include those 65 years
and older, serious heart, liver, kidney, or lung condition, diabetic or immunocompromised.

  • All coaches and students will be screened for signs/symptoms of COVID-19 prior to a
workout. Screening includes a temperature check. Responses to screening questions for
each person should be recorded and stored so that there is a record of everyone
present in case a student develops COVID-19.

  • As the temperature outside continues to warm up you may experience false-positive
temperature readings when you arrive for check-in. Here are a few strategies to help you
and us get an accurate reading of your temperature:

    • If you participate in strenuous exercise getting to campus if walking or biking allow yourself 10-15 mins of “cool down” time before conditioning begins.
    • If you wait for a long period of time in direct sunlight/heat prior to conditioning Consider standing in the shade or wearing a hat.

    • If you are not hydrated or dehydrated
Bring cool water to drink before during and after conditioning

Limitations on Gatherings:

  • Workouts will be conducted in “cohorts”. The cohorts are groups of students that are
always grouped together for a minimum of a 3 week period. This limits wider exposure
    if someone develops an infection.

  • A maximum of 12 athletes and one coach make up a cohort.

  • Each cohort of students does not rotate among the other units for the 3-week duration
    of the program.

  • Cohorts must maintain at least 6 feet apart from any other cohort.

  • Appropriate social distancing will need to be maintained on sidelines and benches
    during workouts.

  • Face coverings must be worn by students when they arrive and during some activity.
Exceptions to face coverings are swimming, distance running or other high intensity
    aerobic activity.

Facilities:

  • Hand sanitizer will be available to individuals.

  • Bathrooms will not be accessible during the Summer training.

  • Students are encouraged to shower and wash their workout clothes immediately upon returning to home.

Hydration
All students shall bring their own water bottle. Water bottles must not be shared. Hydration stations should not be utilized.

Student Health
During training and conditioning if a student athlete or someone in their immediate household tests positive for COVID-19 or has been exposed to and
is being tested for COVID-19 please do not come to training and reach out to your coach and our student health coordinator studenthealth@smuhsd.org

Thank you for your continued enthusiasm and support of athletics.
